The earthquake in Chile was caused by the interaction of the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate.
The Nazca Plate is a relatively small oceanic plate that is subducting (diving) beneath the larger South American Plate. This subduction process is what causes the earthquakes and volcanic activity in the region.
