  • Chalk: A Guide to Its Classification as a Sedimentary Rock
Chalk belongs to the sedimentary rock group.

    Here's why:

    * Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments, which are fragments of other rocks, minerals, or organic matter.

    * Chalk is made up primarily of the calcium carbonate shells of microscopic marine organisms called coccolithophores. These shells accumulate on the ocean floor over millions of years, eventually compacting and hardening into chalk.
