  • Shield Volcanoes: Formation, Characteristics & Examples
Volcanoes with broad, gently sloping sides are called shield volcanoes.

    Here's why:

    * Lava Type: They are formed by eruptions of very fluid, basaltic lava. This lava flows easily and spreads out over a wide area, creating the gentle slopes.

    * Shape: The shape resembles a warrior's shield lying on the ground, hence the name.

    Examples of Shield Volcanoes:

    * Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii: These are some of the largest volcanoes on Earth.

    * Mount Etna in Italy: While it also has some explosive eruptions, Etna is primarily a shield volcano.

    * Olympus Mons on Mars: This is the largest volcano in the solar system and a classic example of a shield volcano.
