  • Heaviest Sediments: Understanding Density and Weight
It's tricky to say definitively which sediment is the heaviest because "heaviness" can be interpreted in a few ways:

    * Density: If we're talking about density, then heavy minerals like magnetite, ilmenite, and chromite would be the heaviest. These minerals are often found in sand and gravel.

    * Weight: If we're talking about weight per unit volume, then a dense rock like basalt would be heavier than a loose sediment like sand.

    * Specific Gravity: This is a more precise way to measure heaviness. It compares the density of a substance to the density of water. Here again, heavy minerals like those mentioned above would have the highest specific gravity.

So, the answer depends on how you define "heavy." But in general, dense, heavy minerals are the heaviest sediments.
