  • Understanding Stream Deposits: Alluvium & Placer Deposits
Here are three types of stream deposits:

    1. Alluvium: This is the most common type of stream deposit. It consists of loose, unconsolidated sediments that are transported and deposited by flowing water. Alluvium can range in size from fine clay to large boulders, and it is typically found in riverbeds, floodplains, and deltas.

    2. Placer Deposits: These are accumulations of valuable minerals, such as gold, platinum, and diamonds, that have been concentrated by stream action. Placer deposits form when heavier minerals are separated from lighter ones by the force of flowing water. They are often found in riverbeds, especially in areas where the stream gradient is steep or where there are sudden changes in flow velocity.

    3. Colluvium: This is a type of deposit that forms at the base of slopes due to the action of gravity. Colluvium typically consists of a mixture of weathered rock, soil, and organic matter, and it is often transported by surface runoff. While not directly a stream deposit, colluvium can be reworked and incorporated into stream deposits during periods of high flow.
