  • Plate Tectonics in Haiti and Chile: A Collision Analysis
The plates that collide in Haiti and Chile are:

    Haiti:

    * North American Plate: This is the larger plate that the Caribbean Plate is colliding with.

    * Caribbean Plate: This smaller plate is being pushed eastward by the North American Plate.

The collision between these plates is responsible for the formation of the Hispaniola Island, which Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic, as well as the occurrence of earthquakes in the region.

    Chile:

    * Nazca Plate: This oceanic plate is being subducted (pushed under) the South American Plate.

    * South American Plate: This continental plate is overriding the Nazca Plate.

The subduction zone between these plates is responsible for the formation of the Andes Mountains and the high frequency of earthquakes and volcanic activity along the Chilean coast.
