  • Understanding Longitude and Latitude: Minutes and Seconds Explained
    Longitude and latitude are further divided into:

    Longitude:

    * Minutes: Each degree of longitude is divided into 60 minutes.

    * Seconds: Each minute is further divided into 60 seconds.

    Latitude:

    * Minutes: Each degree of latitude is divided into 60 minutes.

    * Seconds: Each minute is further divided into 60 seconds.

    This system of dividing degrees into minutes and seconds is called the sexagesimal system. It's the same system we use for measuring time (hours, minutes, seconds) and angles.

    Why is this important?

    This division allows for a much more precise way of describing a location on Earth. Instead of just saying "40 degrees north," we can say "40 degrees 45 minutes 32 seconds north," which pinpoints a much smaller area.

    Example:

    * The coordinates for the Eiffel Tower are 48° 51′ 29″ N, 2° 17′ 40″ E. This means it's located at 48 degrees, 51 minutes, 29 seconds north latitude and 2 degrees, 17 minutes, 40 seconds east longitude.
