  • Sedimentary Basins: Where Broken Rocks Accumulate - Geology Explained
Rock formations are broken up and moved and meet in a sedimentary basin. Here's why:

    * Weathering and Erosion: Rock formations are weathered (broken down) by wind, rain, ice, and other natural forces. This creates smaller fragments of rock.

    * Transportation: These fragments are then transported by wind, water, or ice to lower elevations.

    * Deposition: Eventually, the transported rock fragments settle and accumulate in a low-lying area, forming layers. This area is called a sedimentary basin.

    * Lithification: Over time, the layers of sediment become compacted and cemented together, forming sedimentary rocks.

So, the sedimentary basin is the location where rock formations are broken down, transported, and ultimately form new sedimentary rocks.
