  • Popliteal Lymph Nodes: Location, Anatomy & Function
Popliteal lymph nodes are located behind the knee, in the popliteal fossa. This is the diamond-shaped space behind the knee joint, bordered by:

    * Superiorly: Biceps femoris muscle (lateral) and Semitendinosus and Semimembranosus muscles (medial)

    * Inferiorly: Gastrocnemius muscle (lateral and medial heads)

    * Laterally: Lateral head of gastrocnemius and Plantaris muscle

    * Medially: Medial head of gastrocnemius and Soleus muscle

The popliteal lymph nodes are part of the deep inguinal lymph nodes, which drain lymph from the lower extremities, including the foot, leg, and thigh.

They are important for filtering lymph fluid and removing waste products, pathogens, and other foreign substances before the lymph fluid returns to the bloodstream.
