  • Seafloor Oozes: Composition and Formation of Marine Sediments
Oozes on the seafloor mostly consist of biogenic sediments. This means they are made up of the skeletal remains of marine organisms, specifically:

    * Calcareous ooze: Made from the calcium carbonate skeletons of organisms like foraminifera, coccolithophores, and pteropods.

    * Siliceous ooze: Composed of the silica skeletons of organisms like diatoms and radiolarians.

These organisms die and their hard parts sink to the seafloor, accumulating over time to form the oozes. While other materials like clay and volcanic ash can be mixed in, the biogenic component is what gives the ooze its distinctive character.
