  • Understanding Sedimentary Rocks: Formation and Types (Specifically Sandstone)
The type of rock formed when sand grains and other sediments are pressed and cemented together is called sedimentary rock.

More specifically, the type of sedimentary rock formed in this way is called sandstone.

    Here's why:

    * Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments, which are fragments of pre-existing rocks, minerals, or organic matter.

    * Sandstone is a specific type of sedimentary rock that is made up primarily of sand-sized grains (between 0.0625 and 2 millimeters in diameter).

    * Cementation is the process where minerals dissolved in groundwater precipitate between the sediment grains, acting as a glue to bind them together.

So, the sand and other sediments washed down to the sea eventually get compacted by the weight of overlying sediments and cemented together to form sandstone.
