  • Understanding Earth's Latitudes: North-South Lines Explained
Latitudes actually run from north to south, not east to west.

    * Latitude lines are imaginary circles that run parallel to the equator, which is the imaginary circle that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

    * Longitude lines, on the other hand, run from north to south, like slices of an orange, and converge at the poles. They measure distances east and west of the Prime Meridian.

It's easy to get confused, but remember:

    * Latitude measures your north-south position.

    * Longitude measures your east-west position.
