  • Understanding the Tropics: Location, Climate & Ecosystems
The region between 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south of the equator is called the tropics.

    This region is characterized by:

    * High temperatures: Due to the direct or near-direct angle of the sun's rays throughout the year.

    * Consistent daylight hours: Day and night are roughly equal in length year-round.

    * Tropical rainforests and other biomes: The tropics are home to a diverse range of ecosystems, including rainforests, savannas, and deserts.

The tropics are further divided into:

    * The Tropics of Cancer: The northern boundary at 23.5 degrees North.

    * The Tropics of Capricorn: The southern boundary at 23.5 degrees South.
