  • Columbia, SC: Why the Capital Isn't Named After a Seaport
This is a bit of a tricky question! It's actually the other way around:

    * South Carolina's capital city, Columbia, was named after Christopher Columbus. The city was founded in 1786, and the name was chosen to honor the famous explorer.

    * Charleston, South Carolina, is the state's largest seaport. It was founded in 1670 and has been a major port city for centuries.

So, while both cities are in South Carolina, Columbia was named for Columbus, and Charleston is the state's biggest seaport.
