  • Understanding Longitude: Why 20° West Doesn't Pinpoint a Location
You can't pinpoint a specific place just by knowing its longitude. Here's why:

    * Longitude lines circle the globe. A longitude of 20 degrees West runs from the North Pole to the South Pole, passing through many countries and oceans.

    * Latitude is also needed. To find a specific location, you need both longitude and latitude. Latitude lines run horizontally around the globe, like rings.

Think of it like a grid:

    * Longitude is like the vertical lines on a grid.

    * Latitude is like the horizontal lines on a grid.

    Example:

    * 20 degrees West, 40 degrees North would locate you in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Canary Islands.

    * 20 degrees West, 0 degrees would be in the Atlantic Ocean, close to the equator.

To find a specific place, you need both its longitude and latitude coordinates.
