  • New Zealand's Convergent Boundary: Ocean-Ocean Collision Explained
New Zealand sits on a convergent boundary where two oceanic plates are colliding.

This is specifically called an ocean-ocean convergent boundary.

The two plates involved are the Pacific Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate. The Pacific Plate is subducting (diving) beneath the Indo-Australian Plate.

This process leads to the formation of volcanic arcs (like the North and South Islands of New Zealand) and deep ocean trenches (like the Hikurangi Trench).
