Crater Lake is located in the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that erupted cataclysmically about 7,700 years ago. The eruption emptied the volcano's magma chamber, causing the mountain to collapse inwards and forming the caldera. Over time, rainwater and snowmelt filled the caldera, creating the deepest lake in the United States.
