  • Lithosphere: Earth's Plated Outer Layer - Definition & Importance
The layer of the Earth that is broken into separate sections called plates is the lithosphere.

The lithosphere is the rigid outermost layer of Earth, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It's these plates that move around on the partially molten layer beneath them, the asthenosphere, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountains and continents.
