1. Frontal Lobe:
* Landmark: Central sulcus (separates frontal lobe from parietal lobe) and lateral sulcus (separates frontal lobe from temporal lobe)
* Functions: Planning, complex behavior, decision-making, language production (Broca's area), motor control, working memory.
2. Parietal Lobe:
* Landmark: Central sulcus (separates parietal lobe from frontal lobe)
* Functions: Sensory perception (touch, temperature, pain, pressure), spatial awareness, navigation, visual-motor integration.
3. Temporal Lobe:
* Landmark: Lateral sulcus (separates temporal lobe from frontal and parietal lobes)
* Functions: Auditory processing, memory, language comprehension (Wernicke's area), facial recognition.
4. Occipital Lobe:
* Landmark: No clear sulcus separating it from the parietal lobe (but generally considered to be at the back of the brain)
* Functions: Visual processing, color perception, depth perception, spatial orientation.
Important Note: These are the four major lobes, but there are other smaller areas within the brain, including the insula (deep within the lateral sulcus, involved in emotion, taste, and visceral sensation) and the limbic system (located in various parts of the brain, involved in emotions, memory, and motivation).
