  • Metamorphic Rocks: How Heat & Pressure Transform Existing Rocks
    If rocks are pushed deeper into the Earth and experience greater heat and pressure without melting, they will turn into metamorphic rocks.

    Here's why:

    * Metamorphism: This process involves the transformation of existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or even other metamorphic rocks) due to changes in temperature, pressure, and/or chemical environment.

    * No Melting: If the rock doesn't melt, it remains solid. However, the extreme conditions cause the rock's minerals to recrystallize, resulting in a new texture and sometimes even new mineral composition.

    * Examples: Common examples of metamorphic rocks include marble (from limestone), slate (from shale), and gneiss (from granite).
