  • Pompeii & Herculaneum: Ancient Italian Cities Destroyed by Volcanoes
Two towns in Italy that were destroyed by volcanic eruptions are:

    * Pompeii: This Roman city was buried under ash and pumice from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

    * Herculaneum: Another Roman city, Herculaneum, was also destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. While it was also buried under ash and pumice, the city also experienced pyroclastic flows, superheated currents of gas and rock that swept through the city.
