Here's why:
* Ayers Rock (Uluru) was known to Aboriginal people for millennia. The Anangu people are the traditional owners of Uluru and have lived in the area for at least 65,000 years.
* European discovery was in 1873. William Gosse was an English naturalist and author, not an explorer. He was born in 1812 and died in 1888. The first European to document seeing Uluru was William Gosse's son, Ernest Giles, in 1873.
* The name Ayers Rock. The monolith was named after Sir Henry Ayers, the then Chief Secretary of South Australia.
