The Continental Divide runs through the Rocky Mountains and separates the watersheds that drain into the Atlantic Ocean (east of the divide) from those that drain into the Pacific Ocean (west of the divide). Illinois is located in the Midwestern United States and its rivers flow eastward towards the Mississippi River and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico, putting it on the eastern side of the Mississippi River watershed.
