  • Closest Volcano to Massachusetts: Understanding Hawaiian Hotspots
The closest volcano to Massachusetts is Mount Kilauea in Hawaii.

While it may seem counterintuitive, volcanoes are active in the Hawaiian Islands due to a hotspot, a plume of molten rock rising from deep within the Earth's mantle. This hotspot is what formed the entire Hawaiian Island chain over millions of years.

While there are no active volcanoes in Massachusetts itself, the state is still located on the North American Plate, which is moving over the hotspot.
