    This period is further divided into two epochs:

    * Pleistocene Epoch: Covers the time from 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago, characterized by glacial cycles and the rise of modern humans.

    * Holocene Epoch: Extends from 11,700 years ago to the present, marked by a warmer climate and the development of human civilization.
