  • Mount Gambier: History & Volcanic Origins (South Australia)
Mount Famous is not a real volcano. It is a popular name for Mount Gambier in South Australia.

Mount Gambier is not a volcano in the traditional sense. It is a volcanic maar. This means it formed when magma interacted with groundwater, causing a massive steam explosion that blew a hole in the ground.

The volcanic activity that formed Mount Gambier happened around 5,000 to 26,000 years ago. There is no evidence of any eruptions since then.
