  • Spanish Empire in the 17th Century: Continents Controlled
At the beginning of the seventeenth century (1600s), Spain controlled territory on the following continents:

    * North America: They had extensive holdings in what is now Mexico, Florida, parts of the southwestern United States, and Central America.

    * South America: Spain dominated much of South America, including present-day Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and parts of Bolivia, Brazil, and Guyana.

    * Europe: Spain itself, of course, was located in Europe.

    * Africa: Spain had colonies in North Africa, specifically in the Canary Islands and some coastal areas of Morocco.

    * Asia: Spain had a presence in the Philippines and some smaller Pacific islands.

While Spain had a global empire, it was significantly smaller than its peak in the sixteenth century.
