  • Piedmont Glaciers: Understanding Their Unique Flow and Formation
A glacier that flows in all directions is called a piedmont glacier.

    Here's why:

    * Piedmont means "foot of the mountain."

    * These glaciers form when a valley glacier spills out onto a flat plain at the base of a mountain range.

    * The lack of confinement from valley walls allows the ice to spread out in all directions, forming a lobe-shaped mass.

    Examples of piedmont glaciers:

    * Malaspina Glacier in Alaska, the largest piedmont glacier in the world

    * Vatnajökull Glacier in Iceland, which has a large piedmont lobe at its southern edge

    * Many glaciers in the Himalayas
