  • Thermal Weathering: How Heat & Cold Break Down Rock Layers
The process of moving layers of rock by way of heating and cooling is called thermal weathering.

    Here's how it works:

    * Heating: When rocks are exposed to sunlight, they absorb heat and expand.

    * Cooling: At night, the rocks cool down and contract.

    * Expansion and Contraction: This repeated expansion and contraction puts stress on the rock.

    * Fracturing: Over time, these stresses can cause the rock to crack and eventually break apart.

This process is particularly effective in areas with large temperature swings between day and night.
