  • Mount Tambora: History of Discovery & the 1815 Eruption
Mount Tambora was not "discovered" in the sense of being found for the first time, as it has been known to the local people for centuries.

However, the first Western account of Mount Tambora was recorded by a Dutch officer named Hendrik van der Capellen in 1815, shortly after its devastating eruption. He was part of a Dutch expedition that was surveying the island of Sumbawa, where the volcano is located.
