  • Frost Wedging: How Freezing & Thawing Water Breaks Down Rocks
    Mechanical Weathering

The repeated freezing and thawing of water within the spaces or cracks in rocks leads to physical stress as the water in freezing conditions expands within these openings. This expansive stress can cause further cracks which will ultimately break up a large rock into smaller fragments in a process commonly called frost wedging, or freeze-thaw weathering.
