    Silty soil is composed primarily of silt particles, which are smaller than sand particles but larger than clay particles. Silt has a diameter between 0.002 and 0.05 millimeters (0.000079 to 0.00197 inches). Silty soil feels smooth and powdery when dry and can become compact when wet. It has a low organic matter content and poor drainage, making it less suitable for agriculture.
