  • Parent Rock vs. Bedrock: Understanding Soil Formation
The parent rock is the original rock from which a soil is formed. Bedrock is the solid rock that underlies the soil. When the parent rock and bedrock are the same, it means that the soil has formed in place and has not been transported from another location. This is often the case in mountainous areas, where the soil is formed from the weathering of the underlying bedrock.
