  • Isostasy and Mountain Erosion: How Mountains Disappear Over Time
Because of isostasy, a mountain will ultimately erode and be worn down by the forces of weathering and erosion, and the material from the mountain will be transported away by rivers and glaciers. Over time, the mountain will be reduced to a lower elevation, and the land around it will be built up by the deposition of sediment. This process of erosion and deposition will continue until the mountain is completely worn away and the land around it is at the same elevation.
