  • Sediment Sorting by Mass Movement: How Landslides & Flows Shape Deposits
Sediments can be sorted by mass movement processes, such as landslides, debris flows, and avalanches. When these processes occur, the larger and denser particles tend to be deposited closer to the source of the movement, while the smaller and less dense particles are transported farther away. This sorting can result in the formation of distinct layers of sediment, with the coarser material at the bottom and the finer material at the top. Additionally, mass movement processes can also cause the formation of features such as levees, terraces, and channels, which can further sort the sediments.
