The world's largest known deposits of thorium are found in India. Monazite is a mineral, which is a natural constituent of beach sands. It contains thorium, rare earths and uranium. There are substantial reserves of placer deposits of monazite in the coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in southern parts of India.
