  • Why Caves Form in the Valley and Ridge Province: The Role of Limestone
    Limestone.

The Valley and Ridge province is a physiographic region in the eastern United States that is characterized by long, narrow ridges and valleys. The ridges are formed by resistant sandstone and quartzite, while the valleys are formed by less resistant limestone and shale. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is composed primarily of calcium carbonate. It is relatively soft and easily dissolved by water. This process of dissolution creates caves over time.
