  • Glacier Types in Montana: Alpine, Continental & Piedmont
    * Alpine glaciers are found in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. These glaciers are typically smaller than continental glaciers and are formed by the accumulation of snow and ice over time.

    * Continental glaciers are found in the northernmost part of Montana. These glaciers are much larger than alpine glaciers and can cover hundreds of square miles. Continental glaciers are formed by the accumulation of snow and ice over thousands of years.

    * Piedmont glaciers are found at the base of mountain ranges. These glaciers are formed by the accumulation of snow and ice from alpine glaciers. Piedmont glaciers can be several miles long and wide.
