Mineral streak is the color of the mineral powder. It is determined by rubbing the mineral against a streak plate, a piece of unglazed porcelain. The color of the streak may be different from the color of the mineral in hand specimen, especially for opaque minerals. For example, pyrite is visually golden-yellow or brass-colored, but has a black to dark greenish-black streak.
