  • Understanding the Red Color of Queenston Shale: Geology & Iron Oxide
The Queenston Shale of the Niagara Escarpment is red due to the presence of iron oxide minerals, specifically hematite. During its formation, the shale was deposited in an environment with abundant oxygen, which allowed for the oxidation of iron-bearing minerals. As a result, the iron was converted into its oxidized form, hematite, giving the shale its characteristic red color.
