The process that changes igneous rocks into metamorphic is called metamorphism. Metamorphism occurs when rocks are subjected to high temperatures and pressures, causing their minerals to recrystallise and form new structures. The type of metamorphic rock formed depends on the composition of the original rock and the conditions of metamorphism.
