  • Fine-Grained Rocks: Types, Formation & Examples
Fine-grained rocks are those with a small grain size, typically formed from the rapid crystallisation of magma or from the compaction and cementation of sediments such as silt and clay. Some examples of fine-grained rocks include:

    1) Basalt: A fine-grained igneous rock that is formed from the rapid cooling of lava on the Earth's surface.

    2) Shale: A fine-grained sedimentary rock that is composed of compacted clay minerals and silt.

    3) Siltstone: A fine-grained sedimentary rock formed by the compaction of silt particles.

    4) Mudstone: A fine-grained sedimentary rock formed from the consolidation of mud or clay.

    5) Limestone: A fine-grained sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), usually derived from the accumulation and compaction of marine organisms.

    6) Sandstone: A fine-grained sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized particles that have been cemented together.
