  • Understanding Sedimentary Rocks: Formation, Types & Examples
Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediments, such as sand, mud, and gravel, are deposited and compacted over time. The different types of sedimentary rocks include:

    - Conglomerate: A rock formed from the cementing together of rounded gravel or pebbles.

    - Breccia: A rock formed from the cementing together of angular fragments of rock.

    - Sandstone: A rock formed from the cementing together of sand grains.

    - Limestone: A rock formed from the accumulation and cementing together of calcium carbonate, often from the remains of marine organisms.

    - Dolostone: A rock formed from the accumulation and cementing together of calcium magnesium carbonate, often from the remains of marine organisms.

    - Chert: A rock formed from the precipitation of silica from groundwater.

    - Coal: A rock formed from the accumulation and compression of plant material.
