  • How Steep Hills Impact Soil Development: Erosion & Thin Soils
    Transport of Soil: Steep hills are more susceptible to erosion due to the higher gravitational force acting on the soil particles. Erosion removes the weathered soil material, preventing the accumulation of thick soils.

    Rapid Water Flow: Steep slopes cause faster water movement, leading to rapid runoff. This rapid water flow hinders soil formation by carrying away fine particles and organic matter, resulting in thinner soil profiles.

    Less Water Infiltration: Steep slopes have reduced water infiltration capacity because water tends to run off quickly rather than seeping into the ground. This limited infiltration limits the moisture available for plant growth and weathering processes, slowing soil development.

    Limited Weathering: Steep slopes experience more intense exposure to sunlight, wind, and temperature variations. These conditions accelerate the breakdown of rocks, but the rapid erosion removes the weathered material before it can accumulate into deep soils.

    Gravitational Creep: Steep slopes are prone to gravitational creep, where soil and weathered materials move downslope due to the force of gravity. This constant movement disrupts soil formation and prevents the accumulation of thick soil profiles.

    Human Interference: Steep hills are often less accessible and less suitable for agriculture or development compared to gentler slopes. This reduced human activity allows for more natural soil development, but the inherent limitations of steep terrain still result in thinner soils compared to flatter areas.
