    Places on the earth can be located using a coordinate system known as latitude and longitude. This system divides the earth into an imaginary grid, with the equator serving as the reference line for latitude, and the Prime Meridian (passing through Greenwich, London) serving as the reference line for longitude. Understanding latitude and longitude helps in precise identification and navigation of locations worldwide.

    1. Latitude:

    - Latitude lines or parallels run parallel to the equator, measuring the position of a place north or south of the equator.

    - The equator is at 0 degrees latitude, with values increasing towards the North Pole (90 degrees North latitude) and the South Pole (90 degrees South latitude).

    - Each degree of latitude is further divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is divided into 60 seconds, allowing for very precise measurements.

    2. Longitude:

    - Longitude lines or meridians run from the North Pole to the South Pole, intersecting the equator at right angles.

    - The Prime Meridian is at 0 degrees longitude, with values increasing eastward (up to 180 degrees East longitude) and westward (up to 180 degrees West longitude).

    - Similar to latitude, each degree of longitude is divided into 60 minutes and 60 seconds.

    3. Coordinates:

    - To precisely locate a place on the earth, both latitude and longitude coordinates are used.

    - Latitude is given first, followed by longitude, separated by a comma or other separator.

    - For example, the Statue of Liberty in New York City has the coordinates of 40.6892° N, 74.0445° W.

    - This indicates the Statue of Liberty is situated 40.6892 degrees north of the equator and 74.0445 degrees west of the Prime Meridian.

    4. Global Positioning System (GPS):

    - GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that uses the coordinate system of latitude and longitude to provide precise location information.

    - GPS devices receive signals from multiple satellites, calculating their position based on the time it takes for the signals to travel.

    5. Maps and Navigation:

    - Maps often display latitude and longitude lines as a grid to help locate places accurately.

    - Navigation systems in vehicles, smartphones, and online platforms also utilize latitude and longitude coordinates to guide users to their desired destinations.

    In summary, latitude and longitude form a coordinate system that allows for the precise location of places on the earth.
