  • Laterite Soil: Formation, Characteristics & Equatorial Regions
The soil that is mainly found in equatorial regions is called laterite soil. Laterite soils are highly weathered, nutrient-poor soils that are found in tropical and subtropical regions. They are formed when intense weathering conditions cause the breakdown of minerals and the leaching of nutrients from the soil. Laterite soils are typically red or brown in color and have a high content of iron and aluminum oxides. They are often found in areas with high rainfall and temperatures, such as the equatorial regions of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia.
