Alfred Wegener is credited with proposing the ideas that led to development of plate tectonics. He proposed the theory of continental drift in 1912, which suggested that the Earth's continents had once been joined together and had drifted apart over time. This theory was initially rejected by most scientists at the time, but it eventually gained acceptance after the development of plate tectonics in the 1960s.
