  • Red Sea Formation: Understanding Plate Tectonics & Seafloor Spreading
As the Arabian and African plates diverge, a new ocean basin is being created, called the Red Sea. This process of seafloor spreading is driven by the movement of magma from the mantle up through the rift zone between the two plates. As the magma rises, it cools and solidifies, forming new oceanic crust. This process is ongoing, and the Red Sea is gradually widening as the Arabian and African plates continue to move apart.
