A subduction zone is a region of the Earth where one tectonic plate moves under another tectonic plate, sinking into the mantle. The subduction zone is marked by a deep oceanic trench, which is the deepest part of the ocean floor. The trench is formed as the denser oceanic lithosphere of one plate bends and descends beneath the less dense continental lithosphere of the other plate.
