  • Glassy Igneous Rocks: Formation & Characteristics
The resulting texture of igneous rock that formed from extremely rapid cooling lava in which no crystals form is known as glassy or vitreous. This texture is characterized by the absence of visible crystals due to the lava cooling so quickly that the atoms or molecules did not have time to arrange themselves into a regular crystalline structure. Instead, the lava solidifies into a rigid, non-crystalline material, often resembling glass. This texture is commonly found in volcanic rocks such as obsidian and tachylite, which are formed from lava that has undergone rapid cooling on the Earth's surface during an eruption.
